The United States 1919 1941 Essay In source A I am going to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of Roosevelts role in the new deal. Source A is taken from From America in the Twentieth Century, an American textbook by James T Patterson, 1918. This is a secondary source probably based on many primary sources as the writer wasnt around at the time of the events. It shows the entire warm hearted and a good side of Roosevelt. It lacks detail and mainly shows Opinion one side biased which is a weakness. However it does provide a clear point of view on Roosevelt and the new deal, its easy to understand although the language is rather over the top. It is also very informative and talks about fireside chats answering the avalanche of mail. Source E shows figures from the United States government. This is a primary source as the figures were made at the time of the events. The figures show the percentage of unemployed from 1929 to 1933. During 1933 Roosevelt said he was going to get the American economy started and introduce the new deal. Unemployment rises due to depression. In 1934 unemployment starts to drop due to the new deal, but in 1938 Roosevelt stopped the money coming into businesses causing unemployment to rise again. Eventually Roosevelt realised this and put the money back in, unemployment the decreased. Source F is a leaflet printed and circulated by an American Company, around 1936. It is a view of the new deals impact on the USA and is an unreliable source as the figures shown are far from accurate. Source E is useful to historians because it shows you just how badly the Wall Street crash effected unemployment in Britain, it shows how much increase happened over the years and what exactly had an impact on the percentage. It also shows that the new deal did help unemployment a lot and worked and could mean the new deal can be supported; this is a positive and reliable source. It is mocking and making fun of the new deal, many Americans would have loved to work but 60 000 000 was not allowed as companies believed in Laissez Faire and objected to the support from trade unions in attempt to boost their wages, they also opposed to the codes of fair competition. Both sources are useful for different reasons; source E for showing how the new deal helped unemployment and source F for showing not everyone liked the new deal. In my opinion Roosevelt was bold but could have been bolder. To be bold is to be brave, courageous and confident. By looking at source A you know straight away Roosevelt was a bold person as it describes him as having an air of confidence and he helped the ordinary people who were perhaps not as brave. The quote in source B he told people what he was going to do and he did it gives us evidence he had the ability and confidence a president should have. Source D is not very reliable as it is only a photograph and does not have any information, however it does show Roosevelt being brave and meeting new people. Source F is propaganda, and shows people thought Roosevelt was too bold and was left the only person working because of his interfering. Source G is a pamphlet by the American Liberty league and was formed in 1934 by a group of businessmen and politicians, it claims that the new is begging the unfit to be more unfit and that nothing could threaten the American people as seriously as the new deal. Source H gives us a view of prosperity in the USA. It is a poster which is part of a campaign financed by big companies in the USA in 1936. It suggests people are better off without Roosevelt, they thought the worlds highest standard of living was theres no way like the American way. From my own knowledge I know that many people felt let down by the new deal. Yes the number of unemployment did decrease but it was still a high percentage as shown in source E, and lives of black people and farm workers who lived in areas affected by the dust bowl were still very unpleasant and hard. Huey long was one of the three people who opposed strongly to the new deal and Roosevelt, he was perhaps Roosevelts rival, he became popular by bribing the Americans saying if they elected him to be president he would vow to give each of them between $500 and $4000 from $3 000 000 worth of his personal fortunes, (on average an American would get $2000 a year!). In my opinion Roosevelt did work hard but he could have worked harder to improve the lives of everyone, most importantly black people and farm workers. He was bold, but not bold enough. Nonetheless people should be grateful and give him gratitude for the help and support he did give them.

The final step is to balance the charge by adding electrons to the more positive side of the reaction. One the reactant side, the overall charge is 3, while the product side is neutral. To counteract the 3 charge, add three electrons to the reactant side. HNO3 3 H 3 e- → NO 2 H2O Now the reduction half-equation is balanced. Step 4: Equalize the electron transfer. In redox reactions, the number of electrons gained must equal the number of electrons lost. To accomplish this, each reaction is multiplied by whole numbers to contain the same number of electrons. The oxidation half-reaction has two electrons while the reduction half-reaction has three electrons. The lowest common denominator between them is six electrons. Safety of teachers, all other employees and students at a learning intuition can greatly improve if the staff could be armed with concealed weapons. Also we must remember that all citizens of the United States have the right to carry and own a weapon as guaranteed by the second amendment of the constitution of the United States of America. Safety and security could be greatly improved with teachers and faculty carrying concealed weapons on campus, therefore, the teachers and faculty increase security; the safety of the students can also be achieved. The second amendment to the constitution guarantees people the right to own and use a weapon without interference from the government (Constitution). Although to carry a concealed weapon requires additional permitting in all the states and territories of the United States. This is to help everyone is safe and ensure that a weapon does not end up in the wrong hands. This can consist of a complete and through back ground check, fingerprinting, and even mental health evaluations may be required in some states. Some states also require the applicant spent time on the shooting range, classroom, and attend a basic hunter education course. This includes the safety requirements that a person is expected to follow when in possession of a weapon and the proper way to secure a weapon when finished with its use. After the documentation process is completed this ensures the persons has the ability to properly own and maintain a concealed weapon permit. Most teachers and faculty consequently would have to take the time to secure the proper documentation so that they would be compliant with all the state and local laws to carry a concealed weapon. Since, the teachers are going to have more knowledge of the students to know how to defuse a hostile or bad  situation. On the other hand the faculty being familiar with the campus layout would know how to secure the campus for the safety of everyone else on the campus. Even if this situation only happened one more time and it saved the life of one person teachers and faculty carrying a concealed weapon could eliminate this situation from ever happening at any learning institution. Most teachers have already spent at least four years or more in school to teach and help people learn in a safe and secure environment, Not to be in fear that a disturbed or upset student brings a weapon to school and intends harm someone. Also teacher’s giving a grade that a student thinks they should have received a better grade than they did. Then the students that carry weapons to school to settle a score with another student or even the spill over from an incident related to previous gang activity. As a result of teachers and faculty carrying a concealed weapon a second thought would have to be raised in the perpetrators mind knowing they were going into a situation where the opposition is also carrying a concealed weapon. Also, let’s not forget that this is a right that we have and are not in any way be forced into or even have to participate in. Likewise, school systems all over the United States are hiring a school resource officers and private security contractors to have armed personnel on campuses. This is known to decrease the chances of situations escalating with armed persons on campuses. This would provide the added security that is needed to maintain order and safety on our campuses. This will ensure the students, teachers, faculty members are stay safe to further their education and maintain the integrity of the learning institutions today and forever .However, the cost for the added police or contracted security personnel, and this will far exceed the cost of training teachers or faculty personnel to carry a concealed weapon on campus (Lewis). Therefore, let us not forget that all of us will need to use these institutions for schooling, testing, and learning a new job. It is safe to say that doing these things in a safe environment is going to make that easier on anyone when preforming any task required at learning institutions. Only people that are willing and able to participate in this type of program feel a need for the added protection and security for our children in school, teachers, and faculty. What would have happened if a custodian noticed the perpetrator at Sandy Hook Elementary School and challenged him and he never breeched the school. What if the gunman was challenged by the custodian before even getting inside the school. With a concealed weapon on the faculty member this could have been completely avoided and resulting in no loss of any lives. As a result of the presence of weapons on campuses or anywhere we are always going to have the threat of violence testing our security measures. As a result of teachers and faculty members carrying a concealed weapon this will reduce the threat of violence in our school ensuring that our children safe and secure when we leave them at a learning institution. The Rise of Intercollegiate Football and Its Portrayal in American Popular Literature With the success of the Merriwell literature, juvenile sport fiction became abundant. In all subsequent stories, the model for traditional juvenile sport fiction, even continuing today, is the illustrious Frank Merriwell (Oriard, 1982). As the Merriwell series dwindled to a halt in the 1910’s, books began to dominate the world of children’s sport fiction. Oriard (1982) suggested the popularity of these books rose because â€Å"the juvenile sports novel combined the action of the dime novels with the middle-class morality of the Alger (rags-to-riches) novel† (p. 47). In 1912, the year Gilbert Patten retired as the author of the Merriwell stories, Owen Johnson published his children’s novel, Stover at Yale. Dink Stover looms as the hero of Johnson’s novel, which follows young Dink from his freshman year to the beginning of his senior year at the illustrious Yale University. Johnson’s novel while similar to the Merriwell series, establishes a ne w era in juvenile sport literature that starts the maturation process of the collegiate athlete-hero. Many of Frank Merriwell’s challenges did occur on the playing field at Yale in a multitude of sports that included football, baseball, crew, and track. During most of these events, however, the precocious hero and his comrades usually solved a mystery or righted some wrong. In addition, Merriwell left college for a few years, and this respite from college life enabled the multifaceted young man to write a play, purchase a champion thoroughbred horse, and travel the world in his pursuit to stamp out all wrongdoing, all activities contrary to the ideals of amateurism. Mukherjee vs. Rodriguez As of today, The United States accepts more legal immigrants as permanent residents than any other country in the world. The number of immigrants totaled 37. 5 million as of 2006. All of this has to do with Richard Rodriguez and Bharati Mukherjee’s stories based on immigration in the United States. Entitled â€Å"Los Otros, Mis Hermanos† and †Two Ways to Belong in America†. Where as Rodriguez’s story is about a young Mexican immigrant finding it hard to live in a society where he struggles to understand it’s main language. He believes as a child that he doesn’t belong in a country where it’s main language is not of his. He only feels at peace when he is with his family speaking his own language. As well as where Mukherjee’s story is of two sisters named Mira and Bharati, both immigrants and very successful in their careers. Explaining how Mira all of a sudden has rage towards the country she has lived in for thirty years, due to the lack of effort shown by the U. S. Congress to enact a legislation that would not allow any government benefits towards resident aliens. As for Bharati, she has mixed feelings on the subject at hand. Rodriguez and Mukherjee’s stories share a common theme and purpose, but are diverse in their conflict and focus. Los Otros, Mis Hermanos† and â€Å"Two Ways to Belong in America† share a common theme in where they both are legal immigrants living in America. Rodriguez’s story is based on his childhood where he is living as a Mexican immigrant. Since Spanish is the only language he is able to interpret, he reference â€Å"The language of thei r Mexican past sounded in counterpoint to the English of public society† (Rodriguez pg. 309). For â€Å"Two Ways to Belong in America† the two sisters are living in the United States while Bharati is an American citizen, Mira is not. However both have Indian roots within them. For both of them their cultural backgrounds are very strong within them. As of course, them being an immigrant in a new country that they are not familiar with, they both have very strong bounds with their cultural heritage. Where as for example in Mukherjee’s story she shows how traditional her family is with their Indian marriages by saying how they are properly done in her home country. Mukherjee states †We would endure out two years in America, secure our degrees, then return to India to marry the grooms of our father’s choosing† (Mukherjee pg. 316). However, they both did not follow those guidelines by marrying grooms of their own choosing. In Rodriguez’s story he shows how speaking Spanish made him feel at home, by whenever he spoke to his family members or friends in Spanish he felt as if he was recognized as someone special. While there are similar qualities between the two stories there are contrarieties too. One being their formalities of education, reading where Mukherjee’s story was coming, from the sisters were well educated and successful in their careers. They both received degrees in their prestige subjects. As for Rodriguez’s story when he was younger it seemed as if it was very difficult for his upbringing into education. For example, his parents learning of the English language, as he states â€Å"In public, my father and mother spoke a hesitant, accented, not always grammatical English† (Rodriguez pg. 309). It seemed as if the schooling where he was coming from was not as much of a impact as compared to mukherjee’s learning’s. In â€Å"Los Otros, Mis Hermanos† as a young boy Rodriguez was very secluded from the rest of civilization by reason of his inability of learning the English language. In â€Å"Two Ways to Belong in America† the sisters were very much in content with the rest of the world. They would travel all throughout the world willing to try anything new. Where as Rodriguez, he was concealed from his very own neighborhood, he didn’t know the names of his neighbors, as he states, â€Å"But no one in the family knew the names of the old couple who lived next door; until I was seven years old, I did not know the names of the kids who lived across the street† (Rodriguez pg. 309). The stories by Rodriguez and Mukherjee’s stories had a similar case and dedication, however were disparate in their upbringings and socialization. Being in a country where your not accustomed to is difficult enough, living their must be an even bigger challenge. In Rodriguez’s case he couldn’t speak Spanish outside of his home so he felt at lost. In Mukherjee’s situation even after living for 30 years in this country they were still at subject to be dismissed from it. This shows you being the outsider in a world isn’t as easy to sustain, even when they had thought they had finally made it.
