The film A Separation (2011) is a story that goes more in depth than the overall story between a father and mother, and their child throughout the struggles of divorce in Iran. It covers themes such as one’s life and hopes, and social, economic, and political misfortune. In the story, Nader and Simin dispute over living abroad. Simin prefers to leave the country to pursue a better future for herself and her family. Nader refuses to leave the country in order for him to have the ability to take care of his father that is plagued with Alzheimer’s disease, which requires a vast amount of Nader’s time. Simin is determined to create her future and leave the country, and will leave by any means, including divorce from her husband. Although they still love each other, Simin does give great effort to get a divorce, but in Iran she faces difficulties. The movie then goes on to portray these difficulties revolving around Nader and Simin’s divorce. To help with time, an assistant, Razieh, is hired to help take care of Nader’s father. There are a number of lies and manipulations that ensue throughout the movie, including the pregnancy of Razieh and her ability to work, as well as her husband not even knowing about her working in the first place. Unfortunately, a violent turn of events ensues, and the situation becomes very serious. Their daughter, Termeh, is caught in the middle of all of this, and the final decision comes down to what she wishes for her future.
